Thanks for the link. Is it me, or do the large rear cushions on the bank seating have an unfortunate, padded room quality?

I am wracking my brain to recall if there are perfs elsewhere. Can't think of any right now. The stairs leading down to the basement have perfs along the wall. On the basement stairs side there is frosted glass (colored), so that when the light for the basement stairs is turned on, what you see on ...

Roderick Grant and DRN--many thanks for the information. That's quite a portfolio of buildings Hasker Culwell put together. I've never seen the Arizona Price house, but the photos are compelling (except for those metal light fixtures. Where on earth did those come from?)

Many thanks, FTA, very helpful. So, I'm wondering if low-voltage would have come from the client? Or is that the kind of thing Wright would do if he could? Didn't know that about the basement. I wonder if some of that excavated rock was also used to form the road that contributes to the discovery pa...

I was wondering how the easement, which seemed to specify that no books could be removed from the home, allowed the piano to be sold.

Harold Price, Jr. Questions

Questions about Harold Price, Jr.: 1. I understand this house was built with low voltage lighting. Is that common in Wright houses of the time? Or only on the more upscale houses such as this one? 2. Which apprentice supervised construction? 3. The WWPeters addition on the rear of the home (“The K...

Great photos--thanks for posting them. Whoever staged that Arizona Highways photo put a large plant right in front of the fireplace. Considering the importance Wright placed on the hearth, I would call that a shame.

Arch Oboler Film "Five"

Found this in the New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/15/movies/homevideo/15kehr.html?ref=movies Relevant Quote: Released in 1951, Arch Oboler’s “Five is an early example of the postapocalyptic survival film . . . . Oboler, a multifaceted pop-culture figure best known for the radio...

SDR--excellent post, as usual. Isn't it interesting that Wright refers to the gift shop as the lesser design? I can think of many adjectives to apply to this magnificent building, but "lesser" would never be one of them.

On the topic of soaring/daring cantilevers--how do current building codes impact that design element? Extremely? Not at all?

Donahue--Unbuilt project

An artist's rendering of the unbuilt Donahue Triptych. (I always thought it was Donaho?)

Dana to close October 1st

The information I heard from Dana employees in June turns out to be even worse than I thought. The house will close as of October 1st.

The sight on this decision seems very short, indeed.

I saw the awnings too, but given how close that back side is to the street, I wasn't sure if they were there because of the elements or because of privacy. They were quite an ugly element, and the day I visited was in November, and it wasn't particularly warm.

I wonder if it's a bit premature to think that this is going to happen. Politicians say all sorts of things when running for office. Any number of these suggestions end up being little more than vapor.
