I found it interesting that the colors of the "flowers" in the Bradley windows apparently varied from one set to another -- see page one of thread. I don't recall Wright employing an identical design but altering the glass color, as here, in windows in another project. S Wright did a similar thing ...

That bedroom fireplace does seem really big for the room. I always enjoy the little bijoux fireplaces Wright stuck in rooms like this---this is not one of them!

"Along with his lawsuit, Herber asked the judge to appoint an attorney to represent him. He said he has tried to find a civil rights lawyer in the area, but none are willing to take his case."

So the takeaway of the story is that no lawyer will touch this with a ten foot pole.

I used to live right on the other side of the 394 from where this house is. Lots of trees to muffle the traffic sound--I lived two blocks from the freeways and you never heard anything. This house is in a nice neighborhood neighborhood and walking distance to an awesome nature preserve.

Thanks for that. Hundreds of photos online of the house; not a single one of the visitor center. I'll have to take your word . . . ! SDR yes I spent 15 minutes looking for an online image before I posted. And as many times as I have been there for some reason I never took a single snap of the visit...

If memory serves, the visitor center at the Lowell Walter House (Cedar Rock) in Quasqueton, Iowa, its based on one of the Como Orchard cottages.

Somewhere I read that the National Geographic Society had sponsored several expeditions to Mayan archeological sites in the late 1910s and 1920s that were published in the magazine. I suppose this could have been the ultimate inspiration for the whole craze. I am also sure Mr. Wright would deny that...

I saw the house in 2013. It is in seriously tough shape and needs a lot of work. Not sure if any progress has been made since then. For a small town in Iowa 275 K is VERY expensive, especially considering all the work I suspect still needs to be done.

In Brendan Gill's biography of Wright he says Frank was 5'6 and wore lifts in his shoes to appear taller. So Wright's claim in The Natural House would be with the lifts in his shoes....

Why is this still going on? Didn't they say in June that the work was 90% complete? And didn't the judge know then that the plumbing wasn't installed by a professional plumber?

I wonder how much the storage issue is actually true, or just people have too much crap nowadays. I have been in Usonians that have tons of storage. The Lowell Walter house, for instance, has cabinets and shelves the entire length of the bedroom wing.

Roderick, don't you think the multiple drawings and unrealized plans are a reflection of Aline Barnsdall's issues with Wright and his designs, and the power of the purse and her ability to ultimately say "no?" This is one of the things that has always intruiged me, Wright was able to convince so man...

I've been to Cedar Rock a few times, and don't remember them saying that (in spite of them claiming that EVERYTHING in the house was selected by Wright)....and then you get into the bedroom and see Mrs. Walter's Hummel figurines. Pretty sure Wright never approved those.
