Re: Midland, MI

The Alden Dow Home and Studio survived with minimal damage because it sits high enough above the Tittabawassee River. The level of the pond by the conference room is part of a separate water system, with the water level controlled by a small dam just below the house. This system was affected by the ...

Re: Wright and Exposed Structure?

Don't forget the Chauncey L. Griggs house in Tacoma, WA, of 1945. It has exposed rough-sawn (if I remember correctly) trusses (unusual, if not singular for Wright) as the structural element for the roof. Mr. Griggs was a lumberman, so perhaps Wright was showcasing Griggs product at his request.

I have spoken to some Lloyd-Jones friends and no one is aware of a great-granddaughter of Frank Lloyd Wright named "Carrie Wright", who supposedly lives in Scottsdale. A check of some of the other FLW Ebay letters finds her name listed. The Teater letter description says, "Signed by a relative." Of ...

I have contacted Ebay and alerted them to the fraud of this letter. Perhaps others, who have concrete knowledge of other fraudulent items, letters, drawings, etc. can do so as well. I suspect it will always be an ongoing problem.

The Frank Lloyd Wright letter to Archie Teater is unquestionably a fake. The address used in this 1956 "letter" is: Archie Teater, 583 River Road, Bliss, Idaho, USA. This is the current address. In 1956 the road was known as Highway 30. When I bought Teater's Knoll in 1982, the road was known as Old...

I have read The Experience of Place. You are exactly right about Tony Hiss' description of the experience of walking through Prospect Park. This type of writing could serve as an excellent prototype for describing Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture.....as it does in Grant Hildebrand's work. The descr...

Jay: Have you read Jay Appleton's work, which is the source for Grant Hildebrand's thesis about 'prospect and refuge'? Hildebrand took Appleton's thesis, which is really about landscape painting, and applied it to Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture. Appleton's, 'The Experience of Landscape' is fascin...

Roderick, I understand your comment about the white color (an influence of the International Style at the time), but in person it doesn't look as severe as in photographs, due to the shadows created by the uniform chamfered corners. Some of the plaster walls in this house are painted bright colors, ...

Wouldn't it be great if the Conservancy celebrated the completion of the landscape project, and the house restoration, by hosting the Annual Conference in Buffalo?

Yes, that is exactly the reason -- painter's light. Archie's easel was always set up by the prow (north) door.

No, to my knowledge John Eifler has never been to Teater's Knoll, much as I would like to have him as a guest. Tom Casey of Taliesin designed the knee brace details. It should also be noted that the Teaters left a hideous pink steel post at the apex of the fireplace because they didn't believe the m...

Do you notice how there is tape on the elevation drawing of the support for the prow cantilever (35 feet!)? How to support this cantilever was obviously a point of contention for Wright and his assistants at the time the construction drawing were made, and the Teaters 'solved' this problem by suppor...

Article from Dwell.com about Alden Dow Home and Studio

An interesting article about the interior furnishings of the Alden and Vada Dow Residence. Of interest is not only their connection to Frank Lloyd Wright, but also their closeness with Cranbrook, including Florence and Hans Knoll, Jack Lenor Larsen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Eliel and Eero Saarinen...

I corresponded with the owners of the Fawcett house, and this filming was done without their knowledge or approval. Does anyone know what recourse they might have? This invasion of privacy should be a cautionary tale for all Wright property owners. The Fawcett house sits at the end of a 1/4 mile dri...
