Grant Hildebrand (The Wright Space) wrote an excellent book about him, 'Suyama: A Complex Serenity' (U of Washington Press, 2011).

Re: George Suyama architect

SDR: this is interesting. These are two different houses, one by Suyama and one by Kundig (both from Seattle), and they must have called their houses "River House" because of their close proximity to the Wood River. They sit just a couple hundred yards apart, though the Suyama house is elevated abov...

Re: George Suyama architect

Mr. Suyama is on the Conservancy's board. His work is exquisite. It is interesting to see how he adapted his style to fit the Northern California rural ethos, particularly in his open roof framing. When we had the first Idaho 'Out and About' a few years ago, we toured 'The River House', a minimalist...

Re: For sale: Flood-damaged Alden Dow home - Midland, MI

Midland has suffered three 500 year floods in my lifetime, in 1986, 2017 and 2020. The Riecker house is Midland's version of Mies' Farnworth house. Note on the map how close it is to both Sturgeon Creek and the Tittabawassee River. It suffered extensively from each of these floods and had to be almo...

Dealing with visitors in this time of COVID

I recently had a visit from a person, who I had invited from Boise, the current hotspot in Idaho. When I went out to the gate to greet him (my gate which I nearly always keep closed is opaque, to help with privacy on my small, remote property), he stepped up and immediately grasped my hand. It took ...

Re: Midland, MI

The Alden Dow Home and Studio survived with minimal damage because it sits high enough above the Tittabawassee River. The level of the pond by the conference room is part of a separate water system, with the water level controlled by a small dam just below the house. This system was affected by the ...

Re: Wright and Exposed Structure?

Don't forget the Chauncey L. Griggs house in Tacoma, WA, of 1945. It has exposed rough-sawn (if I remember correctly) trusses (unusual, if not singular for Wright) as the structural element for the roof. Mr. Griggs was a lumberman, so perhaps Wright was showcasing Griggs product at his request.

I have spoken to some Lloyd-Jones friends and no one is aware of a great-granddaughter of Frank Lloyd Wright named "Carrie Wright", who supposedly lives in Scottsdale. A check of some of the other FLW Ebay letters finds her name listed. The Teater letter description says, "Signed by a relative." Of ...

I have contacted Ebay and alerted them to the fraud of this letter. Perhaps others, who have concrete knowledge of other fraudulent items, letters, drawings, etc. can do so as well. I suspect it will always be an ongoing problem.

The Frank Lloyd Wright letter to Archie Teater is unquestionably a fake. The address used in this 1956 "letter" is: Archie Teater, 583 River Road, Bliss, Idaho, USA. This is the current address. In 1956 the road was known as Highway 30. When I bought Teater's Knoll in 1982, the road was known as Old...

I have read The Experience of Place. You are exactly right about Tony Hiss' description of the experience of walking through Prospect Park. This type of writing could serve as an excellent prototype for describing Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture.....as it does in Grant Hildebrand's work. The descr...

Jay: Have you read Jay Appleton's work, which is the source for Grant Hildebrand's thesis about 'prospect and refuge'? Hildebrand took Appleton's thesis, which is really about landscape painting, and applied it to Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture. Appleton's, 'The Experience of Landscape' is fascin...

Roderick, I understand your comment about the white color (an influence of the International Style at the time), but in person it doesn't look as severe as in photographs, due to the shadows created by the uniform chamfered corners. Some of the plaster walls in this house are painted bright colors, ...

Wouldn't it be great if the Conservancy celebrated the completion of the landscape project, and the house restoration, by hosting the Annual Conference in Buffalo?

Yes, that is exactly the reason -- painter's light. Archie's easel was always set up by the prow (north) door.
