Re: FLlW and Jim Crow

You don't have to listen to Ms Harris very long to see that she is still another pathetic proponent of retroactive political correctness. She blithely cites Wright's "inattention to matters of racial injustice" and "the absence of people of color" in most of his designs. Why not also accuse him of n...

Re: The Aesthetics of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Organic Architecture: Hegel, Japanese Art, and Modernism

Wright and Hegel ? Give me a break. Hegel belongs strictly to the Academics, or those with tedious minds and vacuous abstract thoughts that accord with such bunk as "the World Spirit." Schopenhauer saw clean through Hegel. Wright knew that perception and feeling were what counted.

Re: Documentary: "An American Home: Frank Lloyd Wright's B. Harley Bradley House"

One of the people convicted in the 1987 murder of Stephen Small, the friendly enthusiast who owned the Bradley house and was then restoring it, is still petitioning to be released from the penitentiary, the Chicago Tribune now reports. The riffraff conspirators kidnapped Mr. Small, buried him alive ...

Re: Documentary: "An American Home: Frank Lloyd Wright's B. Harley Bradley House"

I don't think the Bradley House is quite "there" yet, despite all the extravagant claims in the video. It is unusual, but still semi-Victorian in feel. Note the fixtures, sideboard, and portieres for separating the rooms. Back in its "Yesteryear" days as a restaurant it served the public nicely, bei...

Re: Video: Frank Lloyd Wright Home & Studio - Oak Park, IL

Yes, greatness flourishes away from academia. It has often been pointed out that Wright, Mies, and LeCorbusier excelled free from the burden of academic training. In other fields, so did Abraham Lincoln and Samuel L. Clemens. Free college education for all is a quite silly goal.

Re: Video: Walter House "Cedar Rock - Quasqueton, IA

I was surprised to hear the state park guide pronounce "Quasqueton" the way it looks, because the locals say "Kaskie."

When I was there many years ago, there was no place other than a Casey's to buy food and supplies. It's a remote

location, even for Iowa.

Re: Video: Lecture on Monona Terrace - Madison, WI

O, my, here we go again with the story of the Froebel blocks!

Was the little cherub still playing with blocks at the age of 9 ? A retarded child somehow gets
transformed into a great architect ?

Enough already.

Re: Philip Johnson 1957 AIA Speech

Johnson was a much finer critic than architect, and I find this lecture excellent. It's funny how a man's ostensible profession can become less valuable than his secondary occupation. Think of another example: Thomas Hart Benton was a better writer than painter.

Re: Article: Parker Berry - Louis Sullivan apprentice

Not sure that Parker Berry would have become "one of the greats," but he was quick to pick up on Sullivan's style, like George Elmslie had been. It is interesting that in Berry's time the euphemisms of today--such as "retirement community"-- were not prevalent, thus Berry's incompleted commission in...

Re: Sondern-Adler House

To respond to DRN : Yes, I knew Curtis Besinger for many years. A modest and honorable man. His small house very close by the university where he taught was elegantly arranged with a Japanese folding screen, a Nakashima chair, and such. His taste was as refined as that of the great Japanese tea mast...

Forgot to mention that Kansas City can also boast one of the worst per capita murder rates in the nation. And a public school system that cheats on statistics in order to achieve state accreditation.

Re: Sondern-Adler House

Beg pardon, but Kansas City is a dreadfully segregated place, where the races have been divided for decades by Troost Avenue. The city still is unable to name a street for Dr. King. Kansas City also suffers from an inferiority complex, not without reason. It continually tries to "catch up" with othe...

Re: Sondern-Adler House

Not sure I'd want a weekend house in Kansas City. The rich bachelor in Omaha must be thinking, instead, of Fallingwater. A "retreat" in a sprawling city makes no sense. But it's his money.

Someone should have shot down the drone before it displayed this mess of a campus.
It only makes Thomas Jefferson look to be a very great architect.

Whatever the slope of the ramp, three things bother me about the Guggenheim: (1) Wright overestimated the intelligence of the public in conceiving a ramp for a relaxed walk down from the top, and the public insists on walking UP the ramp; (2) He didn't foresee how trendy art museums would become, an...
