John told me about that WWII island duty as well. It was, I believe, included in the videotaped interview I made with him. I got the impression that he and the couple others on that island were forgotten for long stretches of time, giving them the chance to put together that amphibious craft. I only...

You're right that this is an under explored area of Wright's career, but I have to assume that's because there is no smoking gun that explains the shift in his design vocabulary. My take is this: --he was tired of being the Prairie school guy. --he tried going in a super decorative style - from the ...

Raises an interesting question for me: Is a Wright-designed building that looks the same from the outside, but has different/changed internal framing, still a Wright design? I imagine a Peterson cottage built today would have engineered beams and some steel supports in the liiving room window framin...

What a treat to see a lesser known work. It makes me wonder what other seldom-photographed homes are out there. Price is one of them. This was has a terrific mix of style and rustic cabin-ness. The use of shingles on the exterior walls is pretty unique, and I can't think of a house with such a varie...

To me this points out the glitch I often have with FLW works: the composition is appealing, but the scale is lacking. You could take almost every FLW building and scale it up by 1/3 and have a much more pleasing experience. I think there is a bit of a disconnect for many who only see photos of the b...

Wright did use recessed lighting in the ceiling plane on occasion. The exhibition house for "60 Year" comes to mind...one of my favorite designs and a good example for this discussion. BTW when I talked with John Geiger about that design he said the clerestory window/ceiling height was originally ve...

I am all for a kit-of-parts solution to home building. That's my idea of pre-fab. I long for the day when you can go to Home Depot and by a few wall/floor/roof sections and assemble them into a spare bedroom. Kitchens and Bathrooms would be trucked in and plugged in place. The trick is would this wo...

That "buyer" sounded fishy and I think was a ruse to delay the historic preservation designation. These guys are tricky.
