Re: Any Recognize this Usonian Window

Wright’s initial idea of the exterior wood of a Usonian house was to leave it alone to naturally weather to a silver grey...he stated in his book The Natural House that “wood best preserves itself”. This did not work well in many situations as the wood was bleached by the sun and in some cases, weat...

Re: Any Recognize this Usonian Window

Harold Turner was building the Christie house and Suntop in ‘39-‘40. Wright tapped him to build the MoMA Usonian exhibition house as well, which was ultimately cancelled. It has been theorized that the MoMA perfs found their way across the river to Bernardsville via Turner... some or all possibly as...

Re: Any Recognize this Usonian Window

YES!!! That is an originally installed perforated board (perf)from the James Christie house in Bernardsville NJ. These perfs were removed sometime after the House was sold in the late 1940’s. The originally installed perfs at Christie were identical to the perfs planned for Wright’s unbuilt Usonian ...

Re: Arizona Highways Magazine: Newly Digitized

In the November 2020 issue linked above is a great article about the history of the Carlson house...(OK, one inaccuracy: the author calls the house a "Usonian Automatic"), but that aside, the article is a series of recent photos and written history of the house's ownership. Of note: in the editor's ...

Re: A New Path Forward for the School of Architecture Founded by Frank Lloyd Wright

To my understanding, this is the most logical and potentially successful “path forward” The School has presented over the last 20 years. It would appear to be a win-win: The School is now located on an architecturally rich “campus” on which learning by design/build opportunities abound, and Cosanti/...

Re: Hugo Avila's Wright Renders

The Newman rendering is stunning, as is the design it depicts. Now that we have this type illustration of the original design intent, it might be interesting to compare it to the Legacy version built in Ohio about 20 years ago.

Re: Falling Water landscape drawings

The three trees at the west bedroom terrace may have survived for a while, but the final straw would have been the construction of a small break room for the house staff under the terrace. It is sort of an expanded landing at the head of a stair down to the boiler room. The room is not large but it ...

Re: Frank Lloyd Wright 12 Monograph set

As to a reprint, I’m certain GA knows the Monos are going for high prices, and has already done the math that indicates the potential for profit still doesn’t justify a reprint of the set, particularly in hardcover. We Wright enthusiasts are a relatively small market. There are not enough sets of Mo...

Re: Frank Lloyd Wright 12 Monograph set

Auction estimates listed in auction catalogs are typically lower than the expected price... my understanding is that this is by design. The best deals at auctions seem to be when the audience doesn’t include those who are interested in the item for sale, or those who are aware of the market value of...

Re: Frank Lloyd Wright's Ashes

I can understand those who were “in the room where it happened” finding the comments of those who weren’t to be unfair. But there are so many histories written by others with direct connections to the actions of Mrs. Wright that are not flattering, and at times alarming, I find it difficult for the ...
