Re: Article: Laurie Virr's House 'Rivendell' - Canberra, AU

I thought that this thread might be the likely place to give you Wright Chatters an update on Laurie Virr. I have had the pleasure of visiting with Laurie weekly via Skype for a number of years. Laurie has now been transferred to a physical rehab hospital after two weeks in hospital due to a fall. H...

Well I guess I should just keep to myself. From the builder/owner: Mr Buck I am sending you this message threw my friend/realtor. Mr Jones was an apprentice to Mr Wright. Mr Jones studied and liked Mr Wright's design so well they he held things in or around the same scope of Mr Wright. As to what I ...

E. Fay Jones in Mena, Carver house, Mena AR

Seems the fire damage and repair have been addressed poorly. The furniture sold on eBay. What was is not now. Sad.

ZacharyMatthews, Do you offer any discount for art educators? I have subscribed with joy in the past, but my funds are now limited. Not only am I teaching middle school kids to get off their games, but hope they find a way to MAKE THINGS, with their hands, eyes and minds. This publication is a great...

This is indeed good news on both counts, DRN and Peterm. Much like keeping a numbers matching classic intact.

I'm not sure what could come about by contacting the Conservancy. Would be nice to be on a first-name basis to Mr. Silver. Unorthodox indeed. I'll have to make my bed each day? I've never had a king-sized bed, but there it is. Laurie has done so much in this small space. His design does make more fr...

peterm, A GC that would have the enthusiasm and ability to build something this original and unique. I'll have some time to travel to NC this summer. It will be challenging to be present during critical phases of the construction while living in Texas. Laurie sent me a note with some ways of going a...

Are other homeowners attempting to slow you down? Not at all. I'm out in the sticks, so that is not a problem. There are very good craftsmen and masons in the area. I've seen very fine brick work in and around Hendersonville and Asheville. I'm finding that some builders are not great communicators.

Peter, Finding the right contractors. I don't anticipate problems on permits, as I'm well away from "communities" that have so many restrictions. I can pretty much do whatever I wish, other than the usual safety inspections. Few homeowners want an 832 square foot hut next to their 3,400 sq. ft. Tusc...

"Bill- please keep us posted as to the progress on your place. The best things in life are worth the wait!"

I shall do my best, Peter. It's proving to be a real task.

SDR,

Lovely drawings, but the illustrations have little to do with the chairs shown in Laurie Virr's home. Other than being designed Walter Burley Griffin, we find these in Australia, not America.

As many of you know, Laurie Virr has designed as small house for me. It started out as "a miserable Japanese Hut for my favorite Texan." In fact, this lovely design has developed into far more than I can explain. A true friendship and respect for an Architect who truly "gets it." It is my plan to bu...
