I agree with some parts of your post but not all. Wright did push the envelope and it sometimes caused problems for the owners. And I agree that todays architects and designers create wonderful buildings. But, the OP is interested in a Usonian style home, not something else. Regardless of whether on...

I pose this question: Is it really possible to build a Usonian style home today considering the cost of materials and labor unless you have considerable financial resources and don’t care about resale value? By today’s standards, Usonians were small and used high quality materials (lots and lots...

If that slab has no cracks after 25 plus years, it sounds like it is very stable. (too bad all slabs are not this good) So, if your topcoat installer is confident they can bind to the existing slab and you have enough vertical clearance, this would seem to be a good, cost effective option. I am look...

peterm, Can you elaborate on the break down of the bid. The slab does not look that big and I would not expect removal to be too expensive (but that is always relative). They should be able to break it up quite quickly with the right equipment (backhoe mounted jack hammer) then scoop it up and haul ...

I visited the Kraus house in the afternoon and did not think the living room was dark at all (I think the windows face west). So maybe it just has to do with the time of day. If found the house as a whole very interesting and dynamic, however I did think the 60/120 degree angles were a little on the...

The article link above was very good in explaining the various protection options for furniture. Thanks for posting it. I am not sure what exactly I am wanting to build. Maybe a coffee or end table. I have been looking through my Wright books at examples, but have not found something I really want t...

There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding copyrights and furniture. So, I did a little research on the internet. From most of what I found, it appears to me that most of the copyrights to Wright's furniture have expired by now (more than 50 years after his death). In addition, many copyright cl...

Thanks Laurie, I would be interested in a scan of your copy of the table lamp. Or other electronic version if you have converted it into a CAD app.

Also, what do you mean by appalling drafting? Poorly drawn? I would love to see a photo of the original blueprint.

Building Wright Furniture

Does anyone have drawings, tracings, plans, etc of any Wright furniture pieces they would care to share. I am interested in making some of the simpler pieces from the Usonian homes for my own use.

Thanks,
John

Find a good Designer/Architect who’s work you like. Have the home designed for your site to maximize natural lighting and livability. Build the bones of the house of high quality and energy efficiency. 2x6 framing with foam sheathing or ICFs. An insulated slab is a good solution but may not be an ...

I was thinking about SDR's statement: Mr Wright designed the Usonian to be made without plasterwork. Wright only used plaster/paint in a few Usonians, Schaberg being the only one I can recall at the moment. But, if someone wanted to build a Usonian style home today, it would seem impractically expen...

SDR, Thank you for posting the GW plates, but..... Is there a possibility of getting better quality scans? I cannot read much of the text on the images posted and I am really interested in the details. I am assuming the problem is due to scanning resolution. This of course is an assumption and would...

Thanks for posting the article about the roof restoration. This is the kind of information I was looking for. Anyone know of any similar information regarding other Usonian homes?

Thanks.

Regarding the Usonian cantilevers - I am very interested in any information, drawings or pictures regarding how the site managers actually built these. I know there were site modifications made that Wright was not informed of.
