Restoration timeline

Paul - Perhaps someone from the FLW Preservation Trust would be willing to attend the meeting with you and give the River Forest admin some perspective on the restoration process. (If they've asked you to open Davenport for Wright Plus 2008, I would hope they'd be willing to help you obtain whatever...

Recorder's Office

The real estate contract filed with the Cook County Recorder's Office reflects the price for the Real Property (house and land) only. To the extent that personal furnishings were sold as well, that would be covered by a contract for the sale of Personal Property, not subject to filing with the Recor...

In all fairness...

One of the goals of the home was to be wheelchair-friendly. Wider doorways and greater spaces may be necessary for a wheelchair-bound person to easily access to bathroom, kitchen and closet spaces. Would Wright have done it differently if hired by a client in a wheelchair? Probably. But - discussion...

Christmas in Riverside

As much as the neighborhood kids would give anything to see Santa flying off the cantilevered roof, we, too, tend to keep it simple. Greens in the planters, wreaths or handmade paper snowflakes on the doors. We haven't done exterior lights in the past (we only have one exterior outlet) but we experi...

Thank you

Thank you Mike and D. Shawn Beckwith, for responding. It's nice to have a place where we can share resources on restoration issues. I'm off to get quotes on the 26th. In the meantime, Happy Holidays!

In search of good hardware platers

Hi - we find ourselves in search of a good hardware plater in the midwest. We've used AlBar of Wilmette in the past, with excellent results, but their latest quote is off the planet! Any quality alternatives out there?

Great show!

Just saw the show last night. Wow! A compelling presentation of a most amazing script. Strong performances by all actors (my personal favorite being Harris Yulin's Louis Sullivan, with Peter Weller's Frank and Jay Whittaker's Lloyd tying for second...) I was most impressed by author Richard Nelson's...

I hope I am not alone in believing that "sensibility" means repair and restoration take priority over furnishings. Purchasing a Wright home may come with an implicit moral obligation to preserve these special places. However, there is no corresponding obligation to furnish the home to housewalk stan...

Carpenter Bees

We bought our house (complete with hundreds of dormant carpenter bee larvae) in 2001. We immediately hired a guy with a seasonal guarantee to spray for them each year. Two years ago he switched to something very effective: "Temo Ultra .06%" We have seen a significant decrease in the numbers over the...

Staining exterior stairs

The cordovan Cabot stain on the exterior wood stairs of our Wright prairie home (applied by prior owner in the '80s) is wearing and peeling. Light scraping suggests to the naked eye that the steps were originally stained not cordovan, like the exterior cypress trim, but a lighter color, closer to th...
