Hey SDR...

Yeah, you're probably right. FLW was nothing if not adapatable. Thanks to his mom, he was destined to be an architect practically from birth.

And frankly, with his skills, there's a lot of career paths he could have successfully taken.

Re: Why no one designs houses like Frank Lloyd Wright today

You’re right, DRN, it is economically unfeasible to work today the way FLW did in his. It has become much more of a “business” and less an “art.” I have a theory that if FLW were starting out today he just might find his imagination, artistic genius, and intellect more exercised and satisfied as the...

Why no one designs houses like Frank Lloyd Wright today

I think one of the reasons is that in his day FLW scratch designed most of his components (roof, floor, wall systems, railings, etc.). They came from a single highly creative mind. Today most architects dream up their vision and then cherry pick the components from a catalog. This catalog of compone...

Re: New to Board

SDR, it’s interesting you bring up “style.” FLW had an interesting take on the subject. It appears one of the first steps he took when designing a building was establishing its “character.” He gives the example of the Unity Temple. He states (“In the Cause of Architecture II”), Dr. Johonnot, the Uni...

Re: New to Board

SDR, your name crops up on 90% of the posts I read here. I live by the beach in LA, within walking distance to Frank Gehry’s first home as well as his newest (unpublicized) home, the Eames House, 3 or 4 Neutras, Harwell Hamilton Harris, Ray Kappe, Eric Owen Moss, Konig Eizenberg, and even a FLW. And...

Re: New to Board

Thanks, David. I am constantly amazed at Wright's breadth of knowledge on seemingly any subject, everything from designing evening gowns for clients to dispensing useful advice to a Hollywood Studio.

Re: visions of wright

I just visited this site. It's the equivalent of time-travelling back to Taliesin-past and thumbing through their archives. Brilliant.

New to Board

New here and hoping to learn more about FLW. I have 20+ years’ experience in building in the Los Angeles area. I was also a set designer in Hollywood, but never picked up a book on FLW. The name was known but there seemed to be a forcefield of negativity around his character and work. A study of Rud...
