Re: For sale: John Lautner's Williams House - Los Angeles, CA

If its true that you have to experience architecture in the flesh to understand its effects, the same would apply in spades to non-orthogonal work. Wright's plans are beautiful on the page---but that's a different thing entirely (though not, I would assert, as different as is musical performance fr...

Re: j. willis hughes house (fountainhead)

Yes---thanks. That issue must have gone out, with the one containing Schweikher's Arizona retirement home. Tsk tsk. Also rereading the thread, I'm reminded by Jeff Myers that "FLW MCM" contains photos of Hughes. Here they are, along with Storrer's text and his photo of the bunk beds in the "dormito...

Re: j. willis hughes house (fountainhead)

Perhaps some Wright owners engage in a private contest: "My house has been photographed less that your house . . ." ? Here is material found in Storrer, in Monograph 7 and in Taschen III---preceded by the Lamberson as-built and preliminary plans: Thanks for the plans. I hope someday the owner allow...

Re: j. willis hughes house (fountainhead)

I see that this is one of those "hard to catch" houses. Very few information, very few exterior shots, no interior shots (only one of the fireplace)..? Does anyone know its today status..? At least we have its floor plan, and yeah, similar to Lamberson but very different.

SDR wrote: ↑Sat Aug 15, 2020 9:02 pm One could find Wright's angular play in Lautner's plan---though Wright built many more such houses after 1950 than before---but other than right angles you won't find the elder man's favored 30- and 45-degree ones in the Schaffer drawing. Re: For sale: John Lautner's Williams House - Los Angeles, CA

The "broad over-arching roof" is a defining characteristic of a few of the later houses of John Lautner. As such, this early example might have been a bellwether. Alan Hess joins Williams and Schaffer, two early houses: they were "explorations in free-form geometries." Perhaps so---but the Schaffer...

Re: National Life Insurance Building

Some modern day CGI renderings have been done of NLIB; maybe not quite to the level of David Romero’s models, but they do lend a more photographic sense of the materials and context: Interesting... the first picture is the only one I had already seen... Maybe someday, David takes his time for this ...

Re:

I believe that the structure here would be relatively straightforward; picture in the mind a simple beam at each of the peaks and valleys of that ceiling, and the means of support becomes clear -- as I see it. The gas fireplace might be a solution for any Wright hearth in which the draft is problem...

Re: Oscar Balch house (status 2020)

Storrer's copy of the Wright plans takes care to show elements like the art glass ceiling fixtures; the moldings radiating from them, and running down the walls, evoke everything from orthogonal Art Nouveau to 21st-century circuit boards. They certainly could have functioned as---or hidden---wiring...

The Instagram photos show alternative interior "storm window" treatments. It would be interesting to have our restoration architects' views on the matter.
I see they are planning to install solar energy panels also... If they go on the roof, I don't know how it affects Balch house...

Numerous photos here: http://www.peterbeers.net/interests/flw_rt/Michigan/Harper_House/harper_house.htm This house intrigues me. The use of mirrors is unusual for Wright. Maybe the site only allowed for views to the lake... Good question, Laurie... Well I was looking for information of this house a...

Re: National Life Insurance Buidling

OMG. Sometimes I like more the unbuilt projects than the built ones. This is in my top of Wright's unrealized projects. I think this building would changed Chicago's skyline forever. I consider this one like the equivalent of the Empire States in New York but quite better and interesting. I hope th...
